attribute | NC_GLOBAL | abstract | String | This record represents the Atlantic cod sound production detected from raw passive acoustic data. All acoustic data were processed using the automatic grunt detector and recogniser for Atlantic cod. This method uses a two-stage hypothesis testing algorithm that includes detecting and recognizing all grunt-like sounds. Detector output was manually verified, and false positives are removed. These data were recorded at SanctSound Site SB01_01 between November 12, 2018 and January 28, 2019. |

attribute | NC_GLOBAL | history | String | All acoustic data were processed using the automatic grunt detector and recogniser for Atlantic cod (Urazghildiiev and Van Parijs, 2016). The method uses a two-stage hypothesis testing algorithm that includes detecting and recognizing all grunt-like sounds. In the first stage, the impulsive signals are extracted from continuous background noise. The signal recognition algorithm is based on tests of the features extracted from the spectrogram. Grunts produced by Atlantic cod are recognized from the detected impulsive signals in the second step. For each n-th detected impulsive signal, the recognizer computes the statistic, w(n) (0 less than w(n) less than equal to 1), and compares it with a threshold, c (c=0.37). If w(n) greater than or equal to c, then the impulsive signal is labeled as “Acod” (that corresponds to the class “Atlantic cod grunt”). Detector output is then manually verified, and false positives are removed. Data were processed with Matlab 2016 and newer |

attribute | NC_GLOBAL | summary | String | NOAA and the U.S. Navy are working to better understand underwater sound within the U.S. National Marine Sanctuary System. From 2018 to 2021, these agencies will work with numerous scientific partners to study sound within seven national marine sanctuaries and one marine national monument, which includes waters off Hawai'i and the east and west coasts. Standardized measurements will assess sounds produced by marine animals, physical processes (e.g., wind and waves), and human activities. Collectively, this information will help NOAA and the Navy measure sound levels and baseline acoustic conditions in sanctuaries. This work is a continuation of ongoing Navy and NOAA research, including efforts by NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries This dataset represents the derived products from the raw acoustic data that are archived at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. |
