Short Description:
The NOAA CoastWatch, West Coast Regional Node distributes sea surface temperature measured by Japan's Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E), a passive microwave radiometer aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. A key advantage of passive microwave sensors is the ability to measure SST in the presence of clouds. However, the lower signal in the microwave spectrum leads to lower resolution than other sensors measuring SST.
Technical Summary:
Processing of AMSR-E SST is carried out by Remote Sensing Systems and has been documented in Wentz and Meissner, 2000 and Wentz et al., 2003. Details of the processing, including the latest algorithm updates, can be found on the Remote Sensing Systems website. Further information on the AMSR-E satellite can be obtained from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Marshall Space Flight Center.

AMSR-E SST is validated by comparison with in-situ measurements from the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE), Monterey Server at the U.S. Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center. SST is also compared with the Reynolds Optimum Interpolattion Sea Surface Temperature.

Data is made available at approximately 25km resolution for the global oceans. The data are mapped to an equal angle grid of 0.25 degrees latitude by 0.25 degrees longitude. The mapping uses simple arithmetic means to produce composite images of various duration (1,3,5,8 and 14-day).
Despite our best efforts, incorrect data may often appear within near real time data sets. NOAA CoastWatch accepts no liability for use of these data products. It is recommended that these products NOT be used for navigation.
